On March 24, 1985, an unprecedented journey into the hearts of millions of viewers began with 30 momentous minutes. Doordarshan Kendra Guwahati was born. The Kendra spent its initial years in a rented house in the bustling locality of Pan Bazar in Guwahati. Time flew and on 7 February, 1992 the Kendra moved to its present commodious surroundings at the R G Barua Road. At present, The Kendra is  equipped with a main studio as big as 400 square metres mainly for Live Programmes and recordings, the 2nd studio with an area of 50 square metres is chiefly for the purpose of News transmission, and a third studio measuring 255 square metres remain busy with various recordings. High quality production is achieved through the use of the 36- channel Digital sound track audio console, glitzy graphics derived from the CASPAR CG and the VIRTUAL STUDIO providing the perfect set up. A strong Engineering Unit with adequate man power is always kept ready for Day to Day coverages. In addition to two EFP UNITS, the Kendra has one newly inducted H.D OB van. The strength of the Kendra is further enhanced by the presence of 2 DSNG VANS. For the smooth transmission of DD NATIONAL Programmes and DD NEWS there are 2 NSC 10 KILOWATT ANALOG TRANSMITTERS, while one 6 kilowatt DTT TRANSMITTER with 5 different programmess of Doordarshan is also maintained by the Kendra for digital terrestrial services. Uninterrupted power supply is a must for the smooth running and transmission of any television Kendra. Doordarshan Kendra Guwahati is equipped with 60 KV UPS and 100 KVA DIESEL GENERATOR. It also has centralized AC PLANTS with the capacity of 4×60 Tons. VVIP Coverages, coverages of major events like the inauguration of DHOLA-SADIYA BRIDGE, SOUTH ASIAN GAMES are only a few examples among a long list of events successfully executed by DOORDARSHAN KENDRA GUWAHATI. Apart from covering major political, socio-economical and sporting events DOORDARSHAN KENDRA GUWAHATI has to its credit of running successful programs like Xu-Prabhat Asom, Geetmala, Aashiyana, Sambhavana, Krishi Darshan, Hello Doctor and Ardha Akash to name a few.
