All India Radio hosts the annual Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture as a mark of respect to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, India’s first Minister of Information and Broadcasting.  These lectures were started in 1955 and the first Memorial lecture was delivered by Sri C. Rajagopalachari.  In this series, the speakers in the previous years include Dr. Zakir Hussain, Shri Morarji Desai, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and such luminaries.  The lectures are usually held before an invited audience sometime in the last week of October and broadcast on the national hook-up of All India Radio on the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Patel, which falls on 31st October.
