DIGITAL TERRESTRIAL TELEVISION (DTT)
Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) refers to the transmission of TV signal in Digital mode using terrestrial transmitters. It facilitates better audio-video quality, multiple channels through single transmitter, better reception quality, programmes in Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) quality. DTT services can be received on fixed, Mobile and portable devices.
Doordarshan has started the process of digitalization of its terrestrial network and simultaneously phasing out the analog terrestrial services. In first phase, Doordarshan has commissioned DTT services in 19 cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati, Patna, Ranchi, Cuttack, Lucknow, Jallandhar, Raipur, Indore, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Trivandrum and Srinagar. At present Five DD Channels and Three Radio Channels of AIR are available on DTT platform of Doordarshan at all these locations. However, viewers in Metro cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai can also enjoy their favorite program on DD National in HD quality and two additional channels in SD quality.
With the introduction of DTT services, viewers at above 19 locations can now enjoy their favorite Doordarshan and AIR channels on their Mobile phones and other portable devices like tablets, laptops etc. in addition to their TV sets and also in moving vehicles.
How to Receive DTT:
To watch Doordarshan’s DTT service on an ordinary TV set, DVB-T2 Set top box (STB) is required which can be purchased through open market and e-commerce websites. However, nowadays integrated Digital TV sets (iDTVs) are easily available in the market with in-built DVB-T2 tuner and require only an antenna to receive the DTT signal. One can watch TV on android Smartphone/Tablet without any data charges by connecting DVB-T2 dongles to OTG port of the device. DVB-T2 dongles are also available on e-commerce websites and open market.
